The Dalai Lama is quoted from the Art of Happiness as saying “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive”. True words, and they also apply to ourselves. Loving and accepting ourselves is one of the most difficult challenges that we face. Often we treat others with compassion, we demonstrate patience and we help our friends when they are in need. Why is it then, that to ourselves, we often get angry with our actions, self-criticise and indulge in what we know are self destructive behaviours?
Showing compassion to ourselves is not easy, but we must try. We must treat ourselves as we would a best friend. We must show ourselves the same love that we give to others. We must nurture ourselves. We must hug ourselves from the inside.
Only once we have truly experienced the love of ourselves can we truly give it to others.
Commit to showing yourself love and understanding. Accept yourself for your strengths and weaknesses. Listen to your heart’s inner voice. Give yourself the support and patience that you need. Treat yourself as you would a best friend.
