In the words of the great twenty-first century philosopher Jon Bon Jovi, “Nothing is as important as passion, no matter what you want to do with your life, be passionate”. Sure, we all need a bit of passion but it does bring to mind the question of why does our society lean so heavily towards the idea that each of us has one true passion and/or one true love? If only you could find your one true passion/love you would be successful / richer / thinner / happier (delete as appropriate). But is this really the case?
We are placed under pressure to find this one elusive elixir, and with it the suggestion that the outcome is more important than the journey. Throughout our life we are constantly changing, learning and evolving. Isn’t it more likely that we will have many passions and many loves? Our lives are colourful, nuanced and in constant movement. Everything is transient. We ebb and flow.
Perhaps we instead need to acknowledge the vastness of growth that comes from experiencing many passions and many loves. We are multi-dimensional beings. We nurture ourselves by pushing forward and breaking through boundaries. We grow by weaving a path of many directions, not just one.
If you are feeling the pressure to find your ‘one’ true passion/love then let it go. Embrace your freedom. Enjoy the journey of discovery. Enjoy the potential for growth and change. Enjoy the vastness that awaits you. Enjoy sampling all aspects of possibility and not just one. You are perfect the way you are. Trust your journey. Be at peace with where you are going. Breathe, relax and enjoy the ever changing scenery.
